John Zimmel: Four Tips on Growing Your Brand on Instagram

John Zimmel is a 21 year-old entrepreneur who owns four media companies and knows a thing or two about social media tips and tricks.

Instagram is one of the most active social media sites. With one billion users*, businesses have a tremendous opportunity to leverage its marketing potential where they can grow engagement, brand awareness, and revenue.

As a media entrepreneur, John Zimmel has seen Instagram work wonders for businesses of every kind. Here are three tips on how to use Instagram to improve your brand.John Zimmel of Greenwich

1) Strategic Partnerships
Starting the process of building a following on Instagram can be overwhelming, but there is one tactic that can help quickly grow your base.

“Partnering with other accounts is a great way to gain followers quickly,” said Zimmel. “You do this by agreeing to do paid or unpaid shoutouts.”

Unpaid shout-outs, or share-for-shares, is when you share one another’s content and encourage your followers to follow the other account. Paid shout-outs help gain even more followers. That is because you’ll be working with accounts that have a large amount of followers who have a good percentage of engagement.

2) Convert Followers into Email Subscribers
“Instagram can be a great way to gain more email subscribers,” said John Zimmel.

But how? Instagram doesn’t allow links on photos or in captions.

“That’s where your bio comes into play,” said Zimmel. “Keep your brand’s Instagram bio short and sweet like a twitter post. Then hit them with a call to action for your newsletter, whitepaper, or ebook that will link them to an email-converting landing page. Make sure to provide real value like a free course or webinar and include a couple PDFs that provide actionable insight.”

Once you have some valuable content in place, you can easily place call-to-actions in your captions that lead to your bio that then lead to more email subscribers, creating an easy process that can be repeated again and again.

3) Create Content Others Will Want to Share
“An engaging Instagram post can be boiled down to two things,” said Zimmel. “Engaging imagery and text.”

You’ll want to choose images that elicit emotion and that can tell a story. Emotion will drive engagement from followers.

To get started on creating compelling content, Zimmel suggests laying a motivational quote on top of a cool image.

“Always contribute the author of the quote and include your logo on the image,” said John Zimmel. “You don’t need to be a graphics artist either. There are lots of tools such as Canva and WordSwag that help you create engaging and emotionally captivating imagery.”

What Vlogging Everyday Has Taught John Zimmel

21 year-old entrepreneur of Greenwich, CT, John Zimmel, has been vlogging everyday for over 350 days. Here’s what he’s learned.

A year ago, John Zimmel of Greenwich, CT was not a business owner; he did not have a big social following, and he did not have an active YouTube channel. As of now, Zimmel owns four businesses and has over four thousand YouTube subscribers who all anxiously await his daily vlog, which covers everything from his adventures filming, producing music, hanging out with his friends and skydiving.

When asked why he set out on the mission to vlog his everyday life, John Zimmel replied, “I wanted to prove to myself that I could accomplish something this big. I had never done something like this before, or held myself accountable. It was a way to follow my passion for videography while learning what it meant to accomplish a goal everyday.”

In just 11 months, Zimmel’s vlogging channel, simply titled, John, has hit over 4,000 subscribers and continues to grow at a rapid pace.

Zimmel’s YouTube channel’s most popular videos include a how-to for an Apple watch wall mount, reviews, advice on entrepreneurship, and personal confessions, as in his video where Zimmel discusses his struggle with dyslexia.

“I don’t regret being as open as I am on my channel,” said Zimmel. “A lot of YouTubers still censor themselves, but I put it all out in the open. It’s an opportunity to connect with my audience, for them to learn from me and me to learn from them by engaging in the comments. Vulnerability creates conversations worth having.”

Zimmel continued, “I’ve learned a lot about myself through this process and have grown not only personally, but professionally. My video skills are better. My post-production skills are better. The process of vlogging everyday has really skyrocketed certain aspects of my life that would’ve taken me years to figure out.”

“It’s always scary putting yourself out there, but it’s worth it,” said Zimmel. “Vlogging is an extreme example of vulnerability, but I encourage my viewers to take chances in all areas of their lives, no matter how small. Apply for that job. Launch that blog. Ask the girl out. Get up at open mic night. The fear of rejection affects every social class, age, and gender. Vlogging has taught be to embrace that fear as part of following my passion. Everyone should do the same!”

Media Entrepreneur, John Zimmel, Shares Tips on How to Grow a Social Media Presence

John Zimmel Greenwich

Owner of four media companies, John Zimmel from Greenwich, CT, shares some of his best tips for growing followers and building relationships on social media.

Quality over quantity: this is John Zimmel’s mantra when it comes to building a likable brand on social media. A young entrepreneur in his early twenties, John Zimmel runs four separate media companies, including his digital content creation agency, West 35 Media.

“Building your brand on social media offers many benefits, even for small businesses,” said John Zimmel. “A good social media presence helps improve your customer service, build brand authority, drive traffic to your website, and build a loyal fan base.”

“It’s more than garnering hundreds of likes or followers,” continued John. “Brands should also be focusing on engagement. Are followers commenting on posts? Are these comments positive or negative? Are they tagging their friends? The best brands build a relationship, a community with their followers.”

So how do brands build their social media presence and create a likable brand that attracts loyal customers and engaged followers?

“For one,” said John Zimmel. “Limit promotional content. No more than 10%. The majority of your content should be split between interesting and informative content and user-generated content. People don’t follow you to be blasted with promos, coupons, sales, and other incentives. They do it to either learn more about your brand’s industry or to be entertained. Incentives play only a small part in keeping peoples’ interest.”

“As a second tactic, learn the best times to post on social media,” said John Zimmel. “Facebook and Instagram offer some great insights and analytics around your followers’ engagement levels. If you’re just starting out, there are a few general rules of thumb you can follow.”

For Facebook, the best days to post are between Thursday and Sunday, between the times of 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Instagram’s best days are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during lunchtime (11:00 AM to 1:00 PM) and after work (7:00 PM to 9:00 PM).

As a young entrepreneur in his early twenties, John Zimmel has experienced firsthand what it feels like to have big dreams only to feel the existential dread from now knowing where to begin to start achieving them.John Zimmel Greenwich

“When you’re trying to start a business from scratch as a young person, it feels like the odds are against you,” said Zimmel. “Friends are off focusing on having fun, and you’re left to navigate an industry without any contacts, qualifications, or reputation. But there have been millions of people standing right where you are. There is a way to launch your entrepreneurial lifestyle, and it starts with absorbing as much knowledge and real life examples of success that you can.”

Here are some of John Zimmel’s favorite books to help budding entrepreneurs find inspiration, knowledge, and real examples of overcoming adversity.

1. Unfu*k Yourself: Get Out of Your Head and into Your Life by Gary John Bishop
“I like this book for its straightforward, no nonsense approach to shaking off fear, doubt, and negative self-talk to become the best version of yourself,” said John. “It’s a great inspirational book that will help light the inner fire in you and finally start your business.”

2. The 4-Hour Work Week: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich by Tim Ferriss

John Zimmel Helps Brands Earn More Revenue Through Creative Product Placement Strategies

Product placement has been used successfully on TV shows and in movies, and its effectiveness has proven to thrive in the realm of social media through the use of influencers and celebrities. John Zimmel, a media entrepreneur in his early twenties in Greenwich, CT, helps his clients capitalize on the social influencer wave so they can rake in more revenue and brand awareness.

John Zimmel (29)“Product placement is a very effective marketing tool,” said John Zimmel. “A famous example is Reeses Pieces in ET, Ray-Bans in Risky Business, and FedEx in Castaway. Only now with social media, companies do not necessarily need to spend millions of dollars to gain more customers and revenue. They simply have to find the right person, with the right content and right amount of followers.”

“Social media product placement is for any budget,” said John.

Even major brands like Coca-Cola are replacing some of their traditional advertising with social campaigns, whereas smaller companies can quickly rise in the ranks by creating demand for products on Instagram and YouTube through product placement and reviews.

“For product placement on Instagram, influencers simply have to tag the company, creating more visibility to the brand. Depending on the contract, the product can be the predominant focus or used as a background prop. Regardless of what a company decides, the key is to utilize the user-generated content to create an authentic buzz,” said John Zimmel.

In terms of using YouTube, John Zimmel continued, “Vlogging is a huge revenue generator for both the influencer and the company. Vlogger, like influencers, connects directly with their demographic because they themselves are a representation. If a vlogger can create a personal brand that is relatable, accessible, and trustworthy, it creates a positive connotation with other companies he or she partners with.”

The most common product placement types on Youtube include simple product placements, which include casually placing the product in the shot, quickly picking up or using the product, or mentioning the product in the video briefly, without interruption to the main topic. Alternatively, the vlogger can go into a brief or in-depth review of the product, in which the review may be in conjunction with other product reviews. If the company wants to be exclusively featured, it will need to sponsor the video in its entirety, which usually entails using up a large chunk of the marketing budget.

“Product placement is popping up everything across social,” said John. “From live videos, stories, and photos, companies can take advantage of the many entertainment options. Just remember to take into account the relationships influencers build and the quality of content. The more authentic the influencer is, the better the impact on your brand.”

John Zimmel: Five Tips on How to Break into the Influencer Game and Get Paid

John Zimmel, a young entrepreneur from Greenwich, CT helps personalities find their personal brand and influencer niche. Here are a few basic rules in how to break into influencer marketing according to John.

Influencer marketing is on the rise. In fact, brands spent over $5 billion on influencer marketing in 2018 and the number will only increase. That’s because influencers work, and trends are finding that social media influencers do not need to have millions of followers to make an impact. Micro-influencers, for instance, generally have less than 100K and still get contracted with big name brands.

“It’s about creating value for your audience,” said John Zimmel. “The more you create valuable content that the audience connects with, the more they will see you as a peer and become to trust your opinions. When a brand sees that in your social pages, that’s when you become an asset to them and a partnership can form.”

John Zimmel understands how overwhelming the thought of becoming an influencer is. But with four media companies under his name, he has helped many clients navigate social media, build their personal brands, and become industry influencers. Here are five basic tips he says will help get anyone started on the path to becoming a paid influencer.

1) Choose Your Niche:

“As an influencer, you’ll be hyper-focused on one topic in one industry so choose something you’re passionate about,” said John Zimmel. “And there are so many niches to choose from, don’t be afraid to brainstorm different ideas.”

“Pull your niche from your daily life,” continued John. “It could be wine on a budget, hiking with your dog, or even fishing.”

2) Understand Your Target Audience:

“In marketing to your target audience, you want to create a buyer persona to understand your audience in a hyper-focused way,” said John.

Buyer personas are fictional representations of an ideal audience or customer.

“Conduct a fake interview with your ideal follower. What do they do? How old are they? What are their hobbies, likes, and dislikes? What are their goals, challenges, and motivations?”

3) Establish Goals:

“Being an influencer is more about gaining followers and getting paid,” said John. “Remember to focus on engagement. How many comments and likes are you getting? Are you engaging back? That is essential in creating a sense of community for your followers. Establish how you will measure the success of your personal brand and then experiment with different strategies. Understanding the strategies of your success is a great tool to have when working with name brands.”

4) Decide on Content:

“Decide on the type of content you want to share,” said John Zimmel. “Do you want to do videos, photos, articles, or a combination? This is will determine which platforms you should focus on.”

5) Choose Social Media Channel:

“Different social media channels allow different content formats,” said John. “So if you want video, choose Facebook and Instagram. If you’re more of a blogger, maybe LinkedIn is your goto. Remember to stick to 2 to 3 platforms as your main network. This helps keep your focus on creating engaging content more consistently.”

John Zimmel Lists Three Tips for Becoming an Entrepreneur

John Zimmel Greenwich CT

At 21 years’ old, John Zimmel is a budding entrepreneur. Here’s three tips that he says will help other young go-getters get their businesses up and running.

Just a few short years ago, John Zimmel was not a business owner. In fact, much like many young people, he didn’t quite know what he wanted to do with his career, or where to start. John only knew that working a nine to five job was not for him.

“I realized I needed something where I could express myself creatively. Construct a career that I could be proud of and energize my day today,” said John Zimmel. “I wanted to be my own boss.”

John is not alone. One survey found that 66% of millennials have goals to start their own business. Yet, many do not. Lack of experience and huge student loan debt have been cited as the main obstacles. But young people have a huge advantage in the self-employed market with opportunities to succeed more quickly than the generation before them. One report from BNP Paribas showed that entrepreneurs between the ages of 20 and 35 had already founded double the amount of businesses as those over 50.

John Zimmel is a prime example. At 21 years old, he already owns four businesses in multiple states. He knows the feeling of wanting to start a self-employed life and knows how daunting the thought of it can be. Here are three tips that helped him get organized and finally launch his passion career as an entrepreneur.

Find What’s Right for You
“Be open to the exploration of the many facets of your life,” said John. “What is exciting to you? Follow your gut. If something feels lackluster, then it’s not right. If you feel inspired and energized by the thought, then you are on the right track.”

John continued, “Some examples include the realization you love math. You love talking about it, breaking it down, and helping people figure it out. This could lead you to a self-employed tutor. Or maybe you love planning trips on a budget. Do that for other people.”

Create a Support Network
“Surround yourself with similar masterminds,” said John Zimmel. “Build a network of people that support you, can advise you, and work with you now or in the future. Building a network is key to any successful business and opens up opportunities that you wouldn’t have thought of yourself.”

To get your networking off the ground, John recommends attending local chapters of business groups regularly to meet people in the same industry and gain experience meeting new people face-to-face.

Know Your Target Audience and Know How to Create Value for Them
“Understanding your audience is very vital to your business success,” said John. “Ask yourself who your customers are. Will your service be relevant to their daily life? Why would they need you? You need to come up with a value proposition, if you have nothing to offer your customers, then you don’t have a business.”
