It’s all about being prepared, John Zimmel says, and research plays a big part in that.

Research is critical, he adds, but it’s not the only thing. Watch out who you accept advice from, John Zimmel says. “Don’t accept advice from just anybody,” he explains, “since there’s a lot of well-meaning advice out there that’s totally incorrect.” John Zimmel says he recommends new entrepreneurs find someone to talk to who has done it already. “I’d look for someone in the same field you’re entering,” he says. Since competitors are often reluctant to share their ideas with someone new coming in, be creative when seeking advice. “For example, if your business is local,” John Zimmel says, “contact someone in a distant state for help. I’d do this by looking for an industry organization that you’re both connected to, or even use LinkedIn,” he adds.

Even with expert help, one of the most important things to watch for when first starting out is your budget, John Zimmel says. “I’ve seen so many people that say you need an office with all the equipment or a state-of-the-art computer network system when all you really need is a laptop to get started, he adds.

It’s finding the difference between what is needed and what is wanted, he says. Get only the things that you really need, and be careful with your money, John Zimmel explains. You might need extra money for more advertising, he adds, to replace the first round of ads that don’t work, for example. John Zimmel says he has seen some people spend thousands on things like stationery and business cards for an online business — things that just weren’t necessary. “It’s smart to keep some money in reserve,” he says.

“Easy,” said Zimmel. “Take a few minutes and think about what comes naturally to you. What comes easy. Is it working on cars? Helping your friends with their problems? Organizing? Find what it is and then charge money for it 10 times. Charge 10 bucks. Just start doing it. If you still like it after 10 times, then I’d say you definitely found your passion.”

Another tip, “Trust your first idea. The first idea is always your best one,” said Zimmel.

Then hit them with a call to action for your newsletter, whitepaper, or ebook that will link them to an email-converting landing page. Make sure to provide real value like a free course or webinar and include a couple PDFs that provide actionable insight.”

What Vlogging Everyday Has Taught John Zimmel

When asked why he set out on the mission to vlog his everyday life, John Zimmel replied, “I wanted to prove to myself that I could accomplish something this big. I had never done something like this before, or held myself accountable. It was a way to follow my passion for videography while learning what it meant to accomplish a goal everyday.”

 

In just 11 months, Zimmel’s vlogging channel, simply titled, John, has hit over 4,000 subscribers and continues to grow at a rapid pace.

 

Zimmel’s YouTube channel’s most popular videos include a how-to for an Apple watch wall mount, reviews, advice on entrepreneurship, and personal confessions, as in his video where Zimmel discusses his struggle with dyslexia. 

 

“I don’t regret being as open as I am on my channel,” said Zimmel. “A lot of YouTubers still censor themselves, but I put it all out in the open. It’s an opportunity to connect with my audience, for them to learn from me and me to learn from them by engaging in the comments. Vulnerability creates conversations worth having.”

 

Zimmel continued, “I’ve learned a lot about myself through this process and have grown not only personally, but professionally. My video skills are better. My post-production skills are better. The process of vlogging everyday has really skyrocketed certain aspects of my life that would’ve taken me years to figure out.”

 

“It’s always scary putting yourself out there, but it’s worth it,” said Zimmel. “Vlogging is an extreme example of vulnerability, but I encourage my viewers to take chances in all areas of their lives, no matter how small. Apply for that job. Launch that blog. Ask the girl out. Get up at open mic night. The fear of rejection affects every social class, age, and gender. Vlogging has taught be to embrace that fear as part of following my passion. Everyone should do the same!”

“Building your brand on social media offers many benefits, even for small businesses,” said John Zimmel. “A good social media presence helps improve your customer service, build brand authority, drive traffic to your website, and build a loyal fan base.”

“It’s more than garnering hundreds of likes or followers,” continued John. “Brands should also be focusing on engagement. Are followers commenting on posts? Are these comments positive or negative? Are they tagging their friends? The best brands build a relationship, a community with their followers.”

So how do brands build their social media presence and create a likable brand that attracts loyal customers and engaged followers?

“For one,” said John Zimmel. “Limit promotional content. No more than 10%. The majority of your content should be split between interesting and informative content and user-generated content. People don’t follow you to be blasted with promos, coupons, sales, and other incentives. They do it to either learn more about your brand’s industry or to be entertained. Incentives play only a small part in keeping peoples’ interest.”

“As a second tactic, learn the best times to post on social media,” said John Zimmel. “Facebook and Instagram offer some great insights and analytics around your followers’ engagement levels. If you’re just starting out, there are a few general rules of thumb you can follow.”

For Facebook, the best days to post are between Thursday and Sunday, between the times of 1:00 PM and 4:00 PM. Instagram’s best days are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during lunchtime (11:00 AM to 1:00 PM) and after work (7:00 PM to 9:00 PM).
